J.P. Donville: Canadians in the NCAA 2011 – Weeks 11 & 12top
J.P. (Jason) Donville is an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse.
Besides some outstanding late season lacrosse, the past few weeks have seen a couple of announcements that should be of tremendous interest to lacrosse players north of the border. The first and most obvious is the University of Michigan’s decision to add Division I lacrosse in time for the 2012 season. Given its proximity to the Canada/US border, this program will be of keen interest to Canadian players who want to play top-tier lacrosse and remain close to home. As importantly, with both Michigan and Marquette adding Division I programs it raises the possibility that Division I lacrosse could be on the verge of a real expansion in the mid-west.
While it is difficult to speculate which big-time program goes next, adding another Big-Ten Conference team (with Northwestern being the most logical choice) would create the critical mass for conference play? The ACC has conference play with four teams but a fifth and sixth team would make either the ACC or Big Ten Championships far more interesting. In the meantime, expect the rivalry between Michigan and fellow Big-Ten peers Penn State, Ohio State and Notre Dame to be intense and immediate.
Besides action on the field, the other lacrosse story that has been evolving over the past few weeks is this year’s Tewaaraton award winner. Since 2001, the Tewaaraton award has been college lacrosse’s equivalent of the Heisman trophy and represent the highest individual honor a player can achieve in the game. The award also honors the Native American heritage of the game. The award selection committee normally puts out a watch list at the start of the season, which is narrowed down to 25 men and 25 women at roughly mid season. Five finalists from each of the male and female categories will subsequently be invited to the awards ceremony. No Canadian has ever won the award but past finalists have included Kevin Crowley, Curtis Dickson, and Zack Greer. This year’s watch list of 25 includes four Canadians; Jay Card (Hofstra/Caledon), Kevin Crowley (Stoney Brook/New Westminster), Shayne Jackson (Limestone/Bowmanville), and Stephen Keogh (Syracuse/Toronto). Congratulations and good luck to each as the list tapers down from twenty five to five.

J.P. Donville: Canadians in the NCAA 2011 – Week 10top
J.P. (Jason) Donville is an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse.
Let’s face it – just about every fan of Division I lacrosse would love to see a dark horse team win the “big enchilada”, AKA the NCAA Tournament. Further, given the performances that we have seen over the past few weeks we now know that the leading candidates to accomplish this feat in 2011 are no longer based in Long Island but instead hail from the western fringes of Division I lacrosse. Here we are specifically talking about Notre Dame and Denver. Notre Dame has been quietly putting together another stellar season while Denver has only lost twice this season and those losses came at the hands of the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the country.
Denver’s win over Duke this week was a major statement game for the Pioneers which move them to a #6 ranking in the USILA poll while Notre Dame, which came from behind to beat Georgetown on the weekend sits and waits for Syracuse to stumble. If that doesn’t happen soon, both teams will meet at the end of the month to decide interim bragging rights ahead of the season ending tournament. Elsewhere, Maryland, Bucknell and Colgate continue to gain luster in the eyes of the pollsters while Duke and North Carolina are losing momentum.
From a Canadian perspective it’s been another impressive week, with strong performances from the likes of Keogh, Comeau, Masson, Mann, Webster, Schuss, Pecchia, Triolo, Delmonico, Levick, Mahorn, Oor and Johnston. Here’s my recap of the week that was from a Canadian perspective.

- Canada is known for producing lacrosse players who can put the ball in the net but let’s not forget that all of those goal scorers came from teams that also employed some fairly decent goalies. Catawba’s (NCAA Div. II) Michael Pecchia (BMS ‘08) is a case in point. Catawba has put together a very fine season, including two wins over ranked opponents and last week’s 6 to 5 win over Belmont Abbey showed once again that Pecchia, who made 14 saves in the victory, should be considered amongst the best goalies in Div II.
- Seton Hill (NCAA Div. II) won a gutsy victory over Chestnut Hill that saw Matt Delmonico (BMS ’10) score 6 goals, 2 assists and grab a GB.
- Canadian Div II “Impact” Leaders – As of Apr 10/2011: #10 T.J.Cowx (BMS ’08) 6.31 IPG; #21 Bal Keegan (BMS ’09) 4.67 IPG; #23 Matt Delmonico (BMS ’10) 4.44 IPG; #25 Michael Pecchia (BMS ’08) 4.33 IPG; #26 Chris Delaney (BMS ’10) 4.25 IPG; #29 James Delaney (BMS ’09) 3.67 IPG.
- Canadian “Impact” Leaders In Div III – As of Apr 10/2011: #3 Keegan Bowman (BMS ’07) 9.09 IPG; #16 Richard Lachlan (BMS ’09) 5 IPG.
J.P. Donville: Canadians in the NCAA 2011 – Week 9top
J.P. (Jason) Donville is an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse.
The past week has seen a number of well contested games although upsets and therefore movement in the polls are starting to become rarer. Perhaps nothing epitomizes this more than Sunday’s Big City Classic which saw three superbly played games that were all decided by narrow margins but in the end resulted in no major surprises. Indeed, for probably 50 of the 61 teams in Division I, the focus in April will be to win their respective conference and the automatic qualifier (AQ) that comes with it. “At large bids” will be reserved for teams that finish high in the polls and in Division I, schools like Johns Hopkins, Denver, Cornell, Colgate and Delaware, that are getting hot at exactly the right time of the year are best positioned to grab an at large bid if they don’t in fact win their conference. Schools now on the outside looking in include Ohio State, Stony Brook, Drexel and Georgetown, all of which almost certainly will have to enter the year end NCAA lacrosse tournament through the AQ route.
In this week’s edition of “The Northern Laxer” we focus our statistical magnifying glass on the rookies. Each division has a large number of rookies who are starting to garner significant playing time and having an impact on their team’s respective performances.

J.P. Donville: Canadians in the NCAA 2011 – Weeks 7 & 8top
J.P. (Jason) Donville is an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse.
It is now roughly midseason in the NCAA lacrosse season and if any team needs inspiration for just how much upside their respective team could have if they can squeeze into a year-end tournament then look no farther than the NCAA basketball tournament.
While basketball has taken center stage for the past few weeks there have been plenty of upsets in the lacrosse world which hopefully foreshadow a similarly upsetting NCAA lacrosse tournament which will occur in less than two months time. With teams such as Villanova, Denver, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Siena and Yale suddenly on an upswing and teams such as Stony Brook, Hofstra and Virginia losing momentum, anything is possible.
This is a special two-week edition of the “Canadian Laxer” with emphasis on mid-season scoring numbers. That said, the past two weeks have seen some outstanding individual performances by the likes of Matthews, McMichael, Noble, Neufeld, Bender, Loewen, Jackson, Pecchia, Kallay, Kiekebelt, Crawford, Oosting, Quinn and Daley. Here is my recap of the past two weeks of NCAA lacrosse from a Canadian perspective.

Having a blast in Baltimore!
The Konica Minolta Face-off Classic has emerged as a superbly well crafted showcase of NCAA lacrosse and the 2011 edition held this past weekend in Baltimore did not disappoint. Of the three games, two were closely contested with the Syracuse vs. Georgetown game proving to be the best of the trio. With only 5 seconds left in the match Georgetown forced the game into overtime before Stephen (Killer) Keogh placed the final dagger in a potential Georgetown upset. The Cornell versus Virginia game was also a well played affair but in the end Virginia had too many weapons for the Big Red to contain while the final game saw John Hopkins win easily over a young UMBC squad. Overall, a great weekend of lacrosse with “Northern Laxers” featuring prominently in games all over the country and players like Keogh, Crowley, Houtby, Card, Buchanan, Card, Melnyk, Melnychenko, Sheppard, Artem, Kiekebelt, Bowman, Boissonneault, Mahorn and Jamieson having particularly strong showings. Here’s my recap of the week that was in the NCAA from a Canadian perspective.

Friday Night Lights
Last Friday night before a crowd of close to 15,000 lacrosse fans, Syracuse (resplendent in their retro uniforms) and Virginia put on one heck of a lacrosse game which in the end could only have one victor and that was Syracuse. Both teams appeared a little tight in the first quarter but thereafter it was a game filled with superb goaltending, relentless checking, terrific team offence and defense and the extraordinary performance of one player in particular, Tim Desko who scored 5 goals for the Orange. Of course the Syracuse/Virginia match was a very nice lead-in to another great weekend of NCAA lacrosse that saw important games played throughout the weekend. Canadian laxers played a prominent role in a number of these games with Lincoln, Card, McBride, Noble, Matthews, Webster, Adams, Loewen, Sheppard, Pantelone, Beard, Johnston, and Boissoneault having particularly noteworthy performances. Former Burnaby Mountain Selects midfielder James Delaney (Port Coquitlam, BC / St. Thomas More Collegiate) has been named to the 2011 England National Indoor Team. The 23-man roster will represent England at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship from May 21-28, 2011 at Telsa Arena in Prague, Czech Republic.
This will be Delaney’s first time representing England in either box (indoor) or field lacrosse. Team England finished fourth in their inaugural appearance at the 2007 World Indoor Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia after playing Team USA in the bronze medal game.
Delaney, a 2009 graduate of the Burnaby Mountain Selects program, is currently playing his sophomore season at Seton Hill University (NCAA Div. II) in Greensburg, Pennsylvania where he was named a 2011 Pre-Season NCAA Division II All-American Honorable Mention by Inside Lacrosse (ESPN Affiliate). As a freshman with the Griffins, Delaney scored an impressive 25 goals and 18 assists to help lead Seton Hill to a 10-4 overall record and a 6-4 mark in ECC play.
Delaney is one of two former Burnaby Mountain Selects athletes that have been selected to compete at the 2011 World Indoor Championship, joining BMS teammate Brian Gillis (BMS ’09), who will be representing Team Ireland.

New York State of Mind
This past week saw a number of exciting games with the two most important occurring this past Saturday afternoon on Long Island. Virginia’s overtime win over Stony Brook lived up to all of the hype and was exactly the kind of game that one would hope to see when two top 5 Div I programs meet face-to-face. The other game occurred a few miles away and saw Hofstra beat Princeton in another well contested match between two talented top-10 squads. Overall, it was a good week for Canadian laxers in the NCAA with Crowley, Lincoln, Noble, Genik, Tao-Brambleby, Adams, Mawdsley, Pecchia, Loewen, Crawford, Lachlan, Beard and Oosting putting up big numbers in their respective games. - Randolph Macon (NCAA Div. III) is off to strong start this year. Last Thursday the Yellow Jackets beat Wesley 13 to 7. A few days later, Randolph Macon won big over Southwestern with Brett Austin (BMS ‘10) adding 3 goals, an assist and a couple of GB’s.
- Wisconsin based Carthage College (NCAA Div. III) is emerging as the team to beat in the Mid-West with a big win on Saturday over Dallas which saw Keegan Bowman (BMS ’07) score 2 goals and 2 assists, and a 13- 9 win over Hendrix which saw Bowman score 2 goals and 3 assists.

Don’t Come To Columbus to Party!
Ohio State’s win over North Carolina this past weekend has undoubtedly been the most interesting story to talk about in this still young NCAA season. The Buckeye’s came into this past weekend’s game largely unheralded and with its narrow win over Detroit-Mercy, more than a few prognosticators were suggesting that North Carolina would defeat Ohio State by a dozen goals or more. It just goes to show you that the game is played on the field and not in the heads of pundits (and that perhaps Detroit – Mercy is tougher than you think!). Johns Hopkins also had a statement game this past weekend with its win over Towson while Jacksonville and Drexel came close to upsetting Georgetown and Virginia respectively. Overall a good weekend for a number of Canadians with “laxers” like Neufeld, Palmer, Mann, Moore, Schuss, Kirk, Gardner, Cudmore, Artem, Jackson, Pecchia, Sheppard and Thouin having particularly noteworthy weekends. Here's my recap of the weekend activities.

Inside Lacrosse (ESPN Affiliate) reporter Ty Xander previews No. 5 ranked Roanoke College in a pre-season look at NCAA Division III.
Looking at the Roanoke offense, Xander talks about the expectations for former Selects attackman Richard Lachlan (BMS '09) projected to be a key contributor for the Maroons in 2011 after a strong freshman campaign last season:
"The Maroons will benefit this spring from using a five-man rotation at attack in 2010. Despite losing three phenomenal seniors at the position, (Coach) Pilat is confident in the guys he has coming back because of the experience. There’s plenty of depth...Richard Lachlan, an underrated player, scored 37 goals as a freshman and boasted a dazzling 85% shots-on-goal percentage. The coaching staff expects the Canadian’s role to increase."

What should we expect from the Canucks in Division II this year?
From a Canadian lacrosse perspective Division II promises to be quite interesting in 2011 as several teams boast large contingents of Canadians on their rosters. While rosters are still being finalized, it appears that there will be at least 69 Canadians playing in Div II this year, a 44% jump over 2010. Like last week’s commentary on Div I, this week I will review the Div II teams that boast a large contingent of Canadians on their roster as well as identify what I believe are emerging blue-chip players and potential high-impact rookies.

J.P. Donville: Canadians in the NCAA 2011 – Week 1top
J.P. (Jason) Donville is an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse.
So how do the numbers look?
For those who have followed this column over the years, you will note that I have kept an unofficial tab on how many Canadians are playing in the NCAA. A decade ago, this number stood at less than 40 and for 2011 this number is now expected to exceed 225, a number that I will firm up when rosters are finalized in the coming weeks. That’s up from the 194 players in 2010 or roughly a 16% improvement. At the Division level, the biggest jump has come in Division II where the number of Canadian’s has leapt from 48 to 62, a 29% improvement. As far as provincial representation is concerned Ontario continues to provide the largest contingent of Canadian laxers playing in the US (roughly 60%). Interestingly, Alberta shows the fastest growth rate (up almost 200% over the past three years) and is rapidly catching up on British Columbia as the second best province to find field lacrosse players in Canada.
Key themes for 2011 in Division I
In this week’s edition of Canadians in the NCAA I will focus my commentary strictly on Division I and to the three story-lines that I believe are of particular interest to fans of Canadian lacrosse. First, how will teams that play with a decidedly Canadian style perform in 2011? Second, which players (mainly sophomores) are likely to emerge as the new marquee players amongst the Canadians playing in the NCAA? Finally, out of the current group of Canadian rookies, which players could have the biggest impact in 2011?

BMS Notes of Interest
- Four of the eleven (’89 born or later) BC Mainland athletes slated to play Div I in 2011 are former Burnaby Mountain Selects:
- Drexel - Ben McIntosh (Coquitlam) Freshman, Midfield
- Drexel - Greg Howren (Coquitlam) Freshman, Midfield
- Providence - Andrew Bromley (Surrey) Junior, Midfield
- UMBC - Nathan Klein (Coquitlam) Freshman, LSM
- The arrival of freshman Ben McIntosh (BMS '10) and a supporting cast that includes Greg Howren (BMS '10) is expected to boost the Drexel Dragons offence, that features several young Canadians.
- Ben McIntosh (BMS '10) is also listed as a potential high impact rookie to watch. McIntosh has superb offensive talents and plays his best lacrosse when the stakes are highest, a point that is evident to anyone who watched the last two Minto Cups.
2011 Maple Leaf Awards Recaptop

The Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse program, in partnership with Burnaby Mountain Selects Lacrosse, hosted the fifth annual Maple Leaf Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club in Coquitlam, British Columbia. The evening was once again a resounding success, as it celebrated Canada’s national summer sport by honoring youth and collegiate field lacrosse in British Columbia.
The 2011 awards dinner and silent auction featured sportscaster Scott Rintoul (TEAM 1040), as the evening's MC, as well as special guest Max Ritz who delivered the evening’s keynote address. Growing up in Wayne, PA and having a standout lacrosse career at the University of Maryland (NCAA Div. I), Ritz has gone from the East Coast hotbed of lacrosse to helping to revolutionize the sport and playing a major role in pioneering it’s growth on the West Coast. Currently a Director of Adrenaline Lacrosse and Co-Founder of the LXM Pro Tour, Ritz took the sell-out crowd of just under 300 along his inspiring journey as a professional lacrosse player turned innovative entrepreneur and talked about the impact that it is having on the game of lacrosse as we know it.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments was the presentation of the inaugural SFU Chris Friesen Memorial Award, a scholarship in the amount of $1000 to provide a student playing lacrosse at SFU with a chance to work harder on their studies, work harder on lacrosse and change the world as a result. Following an emotional and captivating video that highlighted Chris’ 17 young years and his incredible legacy to Be The Best, Chris parent’s Ingrid and Randy Friesen, along with his brother Max, presented the inaugural Chris Friesen Memorial Award to Luke Genereux, a senior captain on the SFU men’s lacrosse team, who also worked with Chris since 2008 as a Coach with the Burnaby Mountain Selects program. Raising over $30,000 to date, the award will continue to be presented annually from an endowment that was established at SFU earlier this year to help honour Chris’ memory.
Proceeds from all five Maple Leaf Award Dinners have gone to benefit the SFU Lacrosse Endowment Fund and youth and collegiate field lacrosse in BC.

My Journey to College Lacrosse - Chris Tessarolo (BMS '07)top
Playing college lacrosse is an aspiration for many young student-athletes. Playing college lacrosse allows an athlete to further his playing and educational careers, while continuing to open additional doors of opportunity for their future.
To play lacrosse at the college level, an athlete must display the ability to succeed on the field, in the classroom and show a coach that he will contribute in a positive way to the environment and culture within a college team.

The Simon Fraser University (SFU) men's lacrosse program, in partnership with Burnaby Mountain Selects Lacrosse, will be hosting the fifth annual Maple Leaf Awards Dinner this Saturday, January 29, 2011.
Each year, the Maple Leaf Awards celebrate Canada's national sport by supporting youth and collegiate field lacrosse in British Columbia (BC). The first event of its kind in Canada, the awards dinner and silent auction will usher in the upcoming collegiate season by recognizing SFU 2010 graduating seniors, introducing the incoming 2011 freshman class, and celebrating SFU lacrosse 2010 team award winners, PNCLL All-Conference and MCLA All-American league honors recipients.
The Maple Leaf Awards will also acknowledge the 2010 BMS Scholar Athlete Award recipients and individual player award winners for the 2010 summer and fall rosters of the Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Touring Teams that competed in California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon and Washington. Scott Rintoul, co-host of the morning show on Vancouver's all-sports station, the TEAM 1040, returns by popular demand for his fourth stint as the evening's Master of Ceremonies, while special guest Max Ritz, an All-ACC attackman at the University of Maryland, current professional lacrosse player and innovative entrepreneur will lead this year's keynote address.

Former Selects attackman Brian Gillis named to Ireland National Team for the 2011 World Indoor Championshiptop
By William Howard, Bby Mtn Lacrosse Media Relations
www.wilcprague2011.com
Former Burnaby Mountain Selects attackman Brian Gillis (North Vancouver, BC / Windsor Secondary) has been named to the 2011 Irish National Indoor Team. The 23-man roster, which was selected after a weekend try-out at the University of Ulster in Jordanstown, Northern Ireland this past fall, will represent Ireland at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship from May 21-28, 2011 at Telsa Arena in Prague, Czech Republic.
This will be Gillis’ second time representing Ireland in the sport of lacrosse after helping lead the Irish to a ninth place finish among 29 teams at the 2010 FIL World Championship in field lacrosse this past July in Manchester, England. Gillis was impressive in his national team debut finishing third in team scoring with 16 goals and three assists to place 44th overall in tournament scoring over seven games.
A 2009 graduate of the Burnaby Mountain Selects program, Gillis will play his sophomore season at New England College (NCAA Div. III) in Henniker, New Hampshire this spring. Gillis will look to build upon a successful freshmen campaign in which he registered 15 goals and 3 assists for the Pilgrims in 2010 and was named NEC’s departmental Male Rookie of the Year.
Gillis is one of four Canadian-born players to be named to Ireland’s 2011 indoor roster. Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, England, Finland, Ireland, the Iroquois Nationals and the United States will make up the eight teams competing in the one-week tournament. Canada won the inaugural World Indoor Championship in 2003 (Toronto, Canada) and successfully defended their title at the last World Indoor Championship in 2007 (Halifax, Canada). 2011 will be Ireland’s second appearance at the World Indoor Championship after an 8th place finish in 2007.

2011 Adrenaline Challenge Reporttop
By William Howard, Bby Mtn Lacrosse Media Relations
(Photographer: Joyce Simons)
The Burnaby Mountain Selects Senior (Grad 2011) and Sophomore (1995 born) Elite fall touring teams wrapped up the 2010 fall season by travelling to San Diego, California, January 6-10, to compete at the Adrenaline Challenge (Jan. 8-9).
More than 80 teams across four divisions descended on the Del Mar Polo Fields to contend for what is largely regarded as the western club lacrosse championship. The Selects combined to post an impressive record of 8-2 (.800) in a tournament field of top club teams from Alberta, Arizona, British Columbia, California, Idaho, Missouri, Nevada, Texas, Utah and Washington. The Senior Selects went 4-1 (.800), reaching the Adrenaline Elite Division Semi-Finals, while the Sophomore Selects posted a 4-1 (.800) record in the South Swell High School Division.
With Burnaby Mountain having attended five Adrenaline events over the past four years, the Senior Selects appearance in the 2011 Adrenaline Challenge Elite Semi-Finals marks the sixth time that a BMS team has reached at least the semi-finals at an Adrenaline tournament. The BMS U18 Selects (’90/’91/’92) reached the Elite Division Semi-Finals at the 2008 Adrenaline Challenge, while the U12 Selects (‘97/’98) and U13 Selects (’96) placed 3rd and 4th in the Youth Division and Middle Division respectively at the 2010 Adrenaline Challenge. Most recently this past December, Burnaby Mountain competed at the Adrenaline Sin City Show Down in Las Vegas, Nevada where the U12 Selects (‘98/’99) were crowned Champions of the Youth Division and the U13 Selects (’97) reached the Middle School Division Semi-Finals.
After two days of competition, the Selects took some time to enjoy the sunny San Diego weather as they visited Pacific Beach and Mission Beach to take in the Ocean Front Boardwalk.
