2010 Adrenaline Sin City Showdown Reporttop

By William Howard, Bby Mtn Lacrosse Media Relations

(Photographer: Joyce Simons)

The Burnaby Mountain Selects U12 (1998/1999 born) and U13 (1997 born) Elite fall touring teams travelled to Las Vegas, Nevada, December 9-13, to compete at the Adrenaline Sin City Showdown (Dec. 11-12).

Facing off against top club teams from California, Nevada and Utah, the U12 Selects posted a perfect record of 5-0 on route to being crowned Champions of the Powerade Youth Division, while the U13 Selects finished 3-2 overall after losing 5-4 in the Brine Middle School Division Semi-Finals.

With their win, the U12 Selects become the fourth BMS team to win a tournament championship in the five-year history of the Selects Elite Touring Program, adding the 2010 Adrenaline Sin City Showdown Youth Division Championship to double Gold Medals at the 2008 U15 and U18 World Youth Invitational and a 2006 Seattle Space Needle Shootout U18 Championship.

In true Vegas fashion, the winning team from each division received a check from the tournament host, Adrenaline Lacrosse, to reward them for their accomplishment. The Burnaby Mountain Selects U12 Elite team received a check for $250 USD for winning the Powerade Youth Division Championship, deciding to donate the entire amount to the Chris Friesen Memorial Fund, an endowment set-up at Simon Fraser University (SFU) to remember BMS athlete Chris Friesen who passed away tragically at the age of 17 earlier this year. The inaugural Chris Friesen Memorial Award will be handed out at the Maple Leaf Awards Dinner in January 2011 to a student-athlete playing lacrosse at SFU to help them realize their academic and athletic goals in pursuit of Chris’ lasting legacy to Be The Best.

In addition to two days of competition, the BMS U12 and U13 Elite teams also took time to visit some of Las Vegas’ most well known sites and attractions. On Friday morning, the Selects made a stop at the famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign before going inside MGM Grand, the second largest hotel in the world, to watch the feeding of the lions at the MGM Grand Lion Habitat. On Sunday evening, the Selects toured “the strip” to see the lights of Las Vegas, with stops at the Atlantis Aquarium Fountain and Fountain of the Gods inside Caesars Palace, the Fremont Street Light Show Experience and the Fountain Show at the Bellagio Hotel. The Selects then wrapped-up their evening with a visit to M&M’s World and the World of Coca-Cola for a late night treat.

Selects U12 and U13 Elite teams featured in Day 1 Recap of Sin City Showdown on InsideLacrosse.comtop

Nestled in between the Sam Boyd Football Stadium and the Sun Rise Mountains, the Adrenaline Lacrosse Sin City Showdown kicked off on the UNLV Rebel’s football practice fields this morning at 9 am. The 6 field spread features 29 teams across 3 divisions: Youth, Middle School, High School, and Elite.

Inside Lacrosse featured both the Burnaby Mountain Selects U12 and U13 Elite teams in their review of the Youth and Middle School Divisions from Day 1:

"The Burnaby Mountain Selects out of Vancouver, British Columbia, brought both a Middle School and Youth team to the Tournament Series. Brent Hoskins and Jeff Cathrea, both Simon Fraser University Alums, founded the program in effort to give their players somewhere to play in the offseason. With a previously established box lacrosse league that dominates in the summer, Hoskins and Cathrea’s program has provided their players with an on field option in the winter. Both teams cleaned up the first day of the event with the Youth Division team (U12) going 3-0, and the Middle School bunch (U13) going 2-1 on the day. The Burnaby teams, comprised mainly of athletes who began playing at the age of 5, relied on strong fundamentals and team cohesiveness in their success on day one."

BMS Recruiting Roundup - 21 Burnaby Mountain Selects products named in Canada High School Rankingstop

By William Howard, Bby Mtn Lacrosse Media Relations

Reputable lacrosse enthusiast J.P. (Jason) Donville, an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse, has released "Canada Rising:" a ranking of Canada's top up and coming high school lacrosse stars. Twenty-one (21) Burnaby Mountain Selects (BMS) products were named by Donville in his inaugural list of the nation's top 50 rising seniors, top 50 rising juniors and top 25 rising sophomores.

The feature, released on October 7, 2010, will compliment Donville's regular blog on “Canadians in the NCAA” that provides frequent coverage throughout the year on Canadian and Iroquois student-athletes playing lacrosse at the US collegiate level.

According to Donville, "over the past decade the number of Canadians playing in the NCAA has gone from a trickle (just over 20 players in 2000) to a torrent (more than 200 Canadians are expected to play in the NCAA in 2011)."

Despite the growing success of Canadian athletes at the collegiate level, the inclusion of Canadian high school players remains virtually nonexistent in similar comprehensive rankings released by US media outlets throughout the year that rank the top rising talent in North America. Donville will attempt to address this matter by putting Canadian athletes on the map in what can be a complex and competitive college recruiting scene.

The 21 BMS products represent just under half of the British Columbia athletes included in the rankings that from coast-to-coast feature 44 athletes from BC (35.2%), 8 from Alberta (6.4%), 4 from Saskatchewan (3.2%), 1 from Manitoba (.08%), 54 from Ontario (43.2%) and 14 (11.2%) from the Iroquois / Haudenosaunee nations.

The Burnaby Mountain Selects products included in the "Canada Rising" rankings are:

Canada's Rising Seniors – the class of 2011

Canada's Rising Juniors – the class of 2012

Canada's Rising Sophomores – the class of 2013

In his official press release, Donville states that the "survey has gone to great lengths to speak with the key lacrosse coaches at the various provincial lacrosse associations to ensure that the "Canada Rising" rankings reflect the breadth and depth of Canadian field lacrosse talent, regardless of whether such talent showed up at the 2010 national box and field championships or not. In the preparation of this report, input was sought from leading coaches involved with the provincial U16 and U19 field lacrosse teams throughout Canada as well as top Canadian and US prep schools (Hill Academy, Claremont, St Michaels, Salmon River, Vimy Ridge, Blue Ridge) and coaches running elite travel teams in Canada (Burnaby Mountain Selects, Elev8, Edge, Kanienkehaka Krunch)."
