Jeff Cathrea / Brent Hoskins
Co-Head Coaches (5th Season at Simon Fraser)
2008 PNCLL Coaches of the Year
Record at Simon Fraser: 43-14 (.754)
(Through May 17, 2008)
2008-2009 will be Co-Head Coaches Jeff Cathrea and Brent Hoskins's 5th season at the helm of a Simon Fraser men's lacrosse team that has accumulated a 43-14 (.754) record through four seasons and a PNCLL Conference record of 27-6 (.818). Under Cathrea & Hoskins, the Clan have appeared in the PNCLL Final Four Conference Championship each of the last four years, reaching the finals in 2005 and 2007 and winning the program's 7th Conference Championship in 2008.
In just four seasons, their teams have produced 7 All-Americans (3 x 1st Team All-Americans) and 30 PNCLL All-Conference selections (11 x 1st Team All-Conference). Away from the field, both Hoskins and Cathrea place a great deal of emphasis on academics and their players have excelled in the classroom, producing the programs first 5 Academic All-Americans and maintaining the programs best academic record. In 2008, Hoskins & Cathrea set the school record for wins in a season (16) and wins in a career (43) on route to being named PNCLL Coaches of the Year.
Both Cathrea and Hoskins have been involved with the Simon Fraser lacrosse program for almost its' entire 12 year existence. Cathrea began as a player at Simon Fraser in 1997 where he would become a four-year starting Attackman and four-time Captain for the Clan. In 48 games, Cathrea would amass an impressive 159 Goals, 51 Assists and 210 Points. This would be good for #3 All-Time in the Clan's record books for Goals and #4 All-Time in Points. This would also make Cathrea one of Simon Fraser’s most decorated lacrosse athletes being named a USILA East/West All-Star in 1998, three-time PNCLL 1st Team Conference All-Star (’98, ’99, ’00) and a USLIA 1st Team All-American in 2000. In 1999, Cathrea would also win the PNCLL Conference Scoring Title and be named to the USILA All-Tournament 1st Team on route to becoming the USILA Tournament Offensive MVP.
Cathrea and Hoskins played two seasons together for the Clan (1999-2000) helping produce Simon Fraser's best season to date: placing 2nd in the USILA after losing a heartbreaker 15-11 to Colorado State University in the 1999 National Championship Final.
After joining Cathrea as a teammate at Simon Fraser in 1999, Hoskins would start on Defense for the Clan each of the next four seasons and be named a Captain in his Junior and Senior year (’01, ’02). A two-time SFU Defensive MVP, he would also earn PNCLL Conference All-Star honors and be named a USLIA 2nd Team All-American in 2001. Following the end of his playing Career in 2002, Hoskins would become the Clan’s Defensive Coordinator for the 2003 season and helped guide the team to its 6th PNCLL Championship in the programs first 7 seasons. Hoskins would be named an Assistant Coach in 2004 before re-uniting with Cathrea and taking the reigns as Co-Head Coaches in 2005.
Both former Student Presidents of the Lacrosse Club at Simon Fraser, Cathrea (’98-’00) and Hoskins (’00-02) bring a wealth of organizational experience to lacrosse and the Clan have become well known as “Canada’s Team”, continuing to represent the highest level of field lacrosse north of the 49th Parallel outside of Canada's National Team programs. Together they have founded the “Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse Association, a registered society in British Columbia. They are also founding Chairs of the “Maple Leaf Awards,” an annual event that celebrates youth and collegiate field lacrosse in British Columbia and are founding Directors of the Simon Fraser Lacrosse Endowment Fund. Each of these initiatives is the first of its kind in Canada and continues to lead the growth of Canada's National Sport.
Under their tenure, Simon Fraser has truly played a national schedule with trips to Arizona, California, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington, in addition to playing opponents from Florida, Illinois, and Rhode Island. Hoskins & Cathrea have re-built the team to a top-25 performer and molded the Clan back into a National contender, finishing the 2008 season ranked No. 5 and reaching the MCLA Quarterfinals. They have also scheduled scrimmages versus Canada and England's U19 National Teams and NCAA Division I opponents University of Denver and Air Force Academy.
Hoskins & Cathrea draw recruits to Simon Fraser on a national level both in Canada and the United States, with players having hailed from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Idaho, Texas, Massachusetts and New York. The majority of players at Simon Fraser have been recruited to play varsity lacrosse, with players choosing to play for the Clan over mid-range NCAA Division I programs or high-level Division II and III teams. The 2008 team featured top players from the BC Selects and Alberta and Saskatchewan U19 Provincial teams and three players who were named to Canada's Top 60 U19 Selection Camp. Both Hoskins and Cathrea continue to travel to top tournaments throughout North America and were invited as off-field evaluators for Team Canada’s U19 Western Try-Out Camp and on-field coaches for Canada's Final U19 Selection Camp in 2007.
Cathrea and Hoskins run the "Burnaby Mountain Selects”, an elite lacrosse development program for student-athletes at the high-school level that focuses on combing excellence on the field with academic achievement. Their elite touring teams attend top college recruiting tournaments throughout North America including: Adrenaline Challenge, San Diego, CA (2007, 2008), Space Needle Shootout, Seattle, WA (2006), Top 16 Fall Shootout, Baltimore, MD (2007), Denver Team Camp, Denver, CO (2008), Hobart Team Camp, New York (2008). They also run the "Usual Prospects Field Lacrosse Skill & Athletic Development Camps” that draw over 200 youth athletes each summer, while Cathrea also operates “Catch 22 La-X-Training & Conditioning,” a lacrosse specific training and conditioning program with clients at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

Hoskins graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Simon Fraser in Sociology and Anthropology (’03) and is Vice President of Marketing for Firstar Sports, Inc. Hoskins also serves as a Member-at-Large on the PNCLL Executive Board. Both live in Greater Vancouver.
