Coaches

Each Selects athlete will receive structured, regimented coaching from a qualified coaching staff that has played and coached at the US collegiate level. Each team will be exposed to a progressional practice plan that will allow for the maximal amount of technical, fundamental, and game strategy skills to be learned.

All teams Boy's Elite Teams are operated by Co-Head Coaches Jeff Cathrea and Brent Hoskins. Cathrea and Hoskins, founders of Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse and the Selects Lacrosse Student-Athlete Development Model, are also the Co-Head Coaches of the Simon Fraser University men's lacrosse program, where they guided the Clan to back-to-back PNCLL Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009 and were named PNCLL Coaches of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Jeff Cathrea (SFU '00) and Brent Hoskins (SFU '02) - Co-Head Coaches, Boys Elitetop

2010-2011 will be Jeff Cathrea and Brent Hoskins seventh season as Co-Head Coaches of the men’s lacrosse team at Simon Fraser University. Through six seasons, they have accumulated an impressive record of 67-23 (.744) and a PNCLL Conference record of 46-9 (.836). Under Cathrea and Hoskins, the Clan have appeared in the PNCLL Final Four Conference Championship each of the last six years, reaching the finals in 2005, 2007 and 2010 and winning back-to-back Conference Championships in 2008 and 2009. They have also led the Clan to three straight National Championship Tournament appearances, most recently playing in the 2010 MCLA Semi-Finals after reaching the Quarterfinals in 2008 and 2009. Since the inception of the program in 1996, Fraser has won an unprecedented eight (8) Conference Championships and ranks 5th all-time with ten (10) National Championship Tournament appearances.

In just six seasons, their teams have produced seventeen (17) All-Americans (5 x 1st Team All-Americans) and fifty-three (53) PNCLL All-Conference selections (24 x 1st Team All-Conference). Away from the field, both Cathrea and Hoskins place a great deal of emphasis on academics and their players have excelled in the classroom, producing the programs first nine (9) MCLA Scholar Athletes (Academic All-Americans) and maintaining the programs best academic record. In 2008, Cathrea and Hoskins set the school record for wins in a season with sixteen (16). They also hold the school record for wins in a career at fifty-seven (67) and were named PNCLL Coaches of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Additionally, under Cathrea and Hoskins leadership, Simon Fraser University became the first institution outside of the United States to be awarded the James “Ace” Adams Sportsmanship Award (District 11); an award given by the US Lacrosse Men’s Division Officials Council, College Officials Committee.

Outside of their success at the collegiate level, Cathrea and Hoskins have coached five (6) SFU players selected in National Lacrosse League (NLL) professional draft and two (2) Clan players who have gone to represent their countries at the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) World Championships, including one player who also represented his country at the European Championships.

Luke Genereux (SFU '11) - Assistant Coach, Boys Elitetop

The Burnaby Mountain Selects 2010 Summer Season is the fifth for assistant coach Luke Genereux. Coach “Genny,” as he is affectionately known by many players and parents, began his career with the Selects in the summer of 2008.

Luke is no stranger to success, as both a player and a coach. During the 2007-2008 season, Coach Genereux was Defensive Coordinator to the 3rd place University of Bristol Lacrosse Club in England. Luke has also coached teams at the community level winning a BC Provincial Gold medal in 2006.

As a player, Luke has won numerous provincial gold medals with the Port Coquitlam Saints and two national gold medals in two appearances with the BC Selects program. Luke has also been the recipient of several MVP and Most Sportsmanlike Player awards. At the collegiate level, Luke was named Defensive MVP of the Simon Fraser University Men’s Lacrosse team and a PNCLL 1st Team All-Conference selection at LSM as a freshman in 2007. As a sophomore in 2009, Luke helped guide the Clan to a PNCLL Conference Championship before once again being named a PNCLL 1st Team All-Conference selection and a MCLA All-America Honourable Mention at close defense as a junior in 2010. Luke will play his senior season at SFU in 2011.

Not only is Luke a dedicated coach and player, he is also a dedicated student at Simon Fraser University. In the fall of 2006, Luke was the proud recipient of the Ted Fridge Memorial Scholarship, the Pacific Coast Field Lacrosse League Bursary, and a Simon Fraser University entrance scholarship. Luke is currently in the process of completing his third year at Simon Fraser perusing a degree in Economics.

Mike Ripley (SFU '10) - Assistant Coach, Boys Elitetop

The 2010 summer season is Mike’s fifth season with the Burnaby Mountain Selects. He was an addition to the program for the 2008 summer season where he helped lead both the Senior Elite and Junior Elite teams to respectable finishes at the University of Denver Team Camp, the Hobart College Tournament, and double Gold Medals at the World Lacrosse Invitational hosted in Coquitlam, BC.

Mike’s coaching experience extends far beyond his time spent on the sidelines with the Burnaby Mountain Selects. He has coached numerous teams in his home province of Saskatchewan, including a U-16 provincial team, and an elite traveling team based out of Saskatoon: the Saskatoon Stingers.

Outside of the coach’s box, Mike is also an accomplished player. While playing for his home club, the Saskatoon Scorpions, he appeared at four Canadian National Field Lacrosse Championships, resulting in a gold and a bronze medal win. He has also won gold medals in provincial tournaments, and was named a positional all-star in his senior season of Junior Lacrosse. At the collegiate level, Mike has played in four PNCLL Conference Championships, and three MLCA National Championship Tournaments. He helped Simon Fraser University to impressive wins at the 2008 and 2009 PNCLL Conference Championships, and aided in their play-off run which ended in quarter final losses at the MCLA National Tournament. A starting goaltender in both his junior and senior years, Mike completed his senior season in 2010 where he helped backstop the Clan to the MCLA National Championship Semi-Finals.

Away from the field, Mike is involved in the community at large. Donating his time and resources to a variety of not for profit groups, has resulted in Mike winning the 2008 Larry Leeper Scholarship for community involvement and development.

Mike just completed the fifth year of his academic career at Simon Fraser University with career aspirations of becoming a secondary school history teacher. Mike graduated with his Bachelor of Bachelor of Arts in History in June 2010, and is currently in the process of completing a second degree, a Bachelor of Education.

Chris Tessarolo (SFU '11) - Assistant Coach, Boys Elitetop

The summer 2010 season is Chris Tessarolo’s first as an assistant coach at Burnaby Mountain, however he is no stranger to the Selects program as a member of the inaugural Burnaby Mountain Selects team in the fall of 2006. Chris played one season with the selects during his grade 12 year, representing Burnaby Mountain at tournaments in Seattle, WA and San Diego, CA.

During his collegiate career as Simon Fraser University, Chris is a two-time PNCLL All-Conference Honourable Mention at attack (2008, 2010). As a sophomore in 2009, he was named to the PNCLL All-Conference 2nd Team and was named as MVP of the PNCLL Conference Championship Tournament, where he lead Fraser in scoring on route to capturing the Clan’s second straight PNCLL Conference Championship. Chris will play his senior season at SFU in 2011.

Sam Biagioni (SFU '13) - Coach / Program Leader, Boys Youth Indoortop

Sam will play his sophomore season at Simon Fraser University in 2010-2011 after playing 3 seasons with the Burnaby Mountain Selects from 2008-2009. During his time with the Selects, Sam competed at tournaments in Baltimore, Denver, Florida and New York and lead the Senior Elite team to a 2nd place finish at the Atlantic Cup in Baltimore, Maryland in July of 2009.

Ryan Hodge (SFU '12) - Coach / Program Leader, Boys Youth Indoortop

Ryan is a graduate of the Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, Texas and will be a junior at Simon Fraser University in 2010-2011. As a sophomore for the Clan in 2010, Ryan was named a PNCLL 1st Team All-Conference selects as a Face-off specialist.
