BMS Junior Elite featured on InsideLacrosse.com's Recruiting Roundup of Day 1 at the 2012 Adrenaline Challengetop

Inside Lacrosse (ESPN Affiliate) Assistant Editor, Geoff Shannon features the Burnaby Mountain Selects Junior Elite team as one of the teams who impressed in his news and notes from Day 1 of the Adrenaline Challenge in Del Mar, California:

"The Canadian club apparently struggled in their first game, ending in a tie with Zip-It. But they poured it on in their [third] contest, dropping over 10 goals in the time I saw them today. The attack unit of Spencer Bromley (2013/Earl Marriott Secondary), Kyran Clarke (2013/Terry Fox Secondary) Liam Kircher (2014/Aberdeen Hall Preparatory) and Keir Yonge (2013/Moscrop Secondary) kept hammering the cage. Kircher especially stood out as a finisher inside. Defenseman Aaron Madaisky (2013/Holy Cross High School) and face-off man Reece Callies (2013/Langley Secondary) were also effective, using their size as leverage.."

BMS BOY'S ELITE: 2011 Tacoma and Portland Fall Exhibition Series Reporttop

By William Howard, Bby Mtn Lacrosse Media Relations

(Photographer: Joyce Simons / Derek Mori)

The Burnaby Mountain Selects U11, U12 and U13 Elite fall touring teams travelled to Tacoma (November 13) and Portland (November 26-27) this month to compete in an exhibition series against top club teams from the states of Washington and Oregon.

In their first season with the BMS program, the U11 Selects have faced induction by fire while earning some valuable experience by beginning the fall playing up a year versus regional U12 opponents. During a day trip to Tacoma, the U11’s opened their season with a 3-3 tie versus Lax Maniax U12 before falling 9-3 to South Sound Starz U12. Next up, the U11 Selects travelled further down the I-5 for an overnight trip to Portland. Tied 3-3 late in the second half of their first game of the day, two unanswered goals would hand the U11’s their second defeat of the fall, losing 5-3 to Sherwood U12. They would then face the Oregon Outlaws U12 who had also fallen to Sherwood U12 by a score of 5-2 earlier that morning. An encouraging match-up on paper, the Outlaws would come running hard out of the gate, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead at the break. A much more competitive second half would see the Selects outscored 2-0 over the final frame with a 7-0 final dropping their exhibition record to 0-3-1.

The U12 Selects have had a strong start to their season outscoring the competition 49-3 over four contests. In Tacoma, the U12’s found their scoring touch early, disposing of both South Sound Starz U12 (16-1) and Lax Maniax U12 (18-0) by convincing margins. Facing a much tougher test down in Portland, the U12 Selects would continue to roll, improving their exhibition record to 4-0 with wins over Oregon Outlaws U12 (6-0) and Sherwood U12 (9-2).

The U13 Selects also began the fall on a winning note, defeating Seattle Starz Green 7/8 (9-3) and Bainbridge Island 7/8 (7-5), before earning their third victory of the fall with an impressive 8-5 win while playing up a year versus South Sound Starz U14. After going undefeated in Tacoma to start the season, the U13 Selects would also be put to the test down in Portland while continuing to gain some valuable experience competing up in the U14 Division. The Selects would open the day versus Lake Oswego U14, falling just short in a 6-4 loss to one of Oregon’s top Youth and High School lacrosse programs. They would then fall 6-0 to Southridge U14 before ending the day with a 9-1 loss to Oregon Outlaws U14, moving their record to 3-3 this fall.

The selection marks the second straight year that Sharples has garnered All-Canadian recognition. Also just completing his junior season, this is Zoehner’s first time on the All-Canadian list, earning recognition as a Long Stick Midfielder.

Sharples, a 2009 BMS grad and captain for the McGill University Redmen, finished fourth on the team in regular-season scoring with 13 goals and 6 assists for 19 points in 9 games. He helped lead McGill to a 9-1 regular season record, earning an automatic bid to the Baggataway Cup Final Four as the league’s top-seed, before falling to Brock University in the CUFLA Semi-finals.

Zoehner also graduated from the Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Touring program in 2009 and was a captain at Queens University for the 2011 season, appearing in all 10 games for the Gaels.

Men's and Women's Lacrosse Lead All Sports In Graduation Ratestop

The NCAA has released the latest Graduation-Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Rate study at NCAA Division I institutions. Men's lacrosse had the highest NCAA GSR and the third highest Federal Graduation Rate, while Women's lacrosse had the highest NCAA GSR and highest Federal Graduation Rate.

The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate to account for transfer student-athletes and others not tracked by methodology mandated by the federal Student Right-to-Know Act. The NCAA rate captures about 37 percent more students than the federal rate, resulting in a more accurate assessment of the academic success of student-athletes.

The Graduation Success Rates (GSR) and the Federal Graduation Rates for Division I sports Four-Class Average 2001-04 Cohorts are as follows:

Men's Sports - GSR - Fed Women's Sports - GSR - Fed
  • Lacrosse - 88 - 73
  • Gymnastics - 88 - 84
  • Skiing - 88 - 70
  • Fencing - 86 - 77
  • Tennis - 86 - 65
  • Swimming - 85 - 72
  • Water Polo - 85 - 72
  • Ice Hockey - 82 - 62
  • Golf - 81 - 65
  • Rifle - 79 - 66
  • Soccer - 79 - 58
  • Basketball - 76 - 48
  • Volleyball - 76 - 66
  • Wrestling - 73 - 56
  • Baseball - 72 - 48
  • Football (FBS) - 67 - 56
  • Football (FCS) - 66 - 54
  • Lacrosse - 94 - 82
  • Field Hockey - 94 - 81
  • Skiing - 94 - 65
  • Fencing - 93 - 81
  • Crew - 92 - 81
  • Gymnastics - 92 - 81
  • Swimming - 91 - 76
  • Water Polo - 91 - 75
  • Soccer - 89 - 71
  • Tennis - 89 - 70
  • Ice Hockey - 88 - 75
  • Golf - 88 - 72
  • Volleyball - 88 - 70
  • Softball - 86 - 70
  • Cross Country/Track - 85 - 71
  • Basketball - 84 - 64
  • Rifle - 79 - NA
  • Bowling - 77 - 56

GSR begins with the federal cohort, and adds transfer students, mid-year enrollees, and non-scholarship students (in specified cases) to the sample. Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the cohort of their initial institution. This rate provides a more complete and accurate look at actual student-athlete success by taking into account the full variety of participants in Division I athletics and tracking their academic outcomes.

FGR assesses only first-time full-time freshmen in a given cohort and only counts them as academic successes if they graduate from their institution of initial enrollment within a six-year period. It makes no accommodation for transfers into or out of an institution. The rate is very limited because it ignores the large number of transfer students in higher education, but it is still the only rate that allows a direct comparison between student-athletes and the general student body.

Selects featured in Preview of Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival on InsideLacrosse.comtop

Michael Watson, founder and director of Lax West and a 4x All American attackman at Virginia (NCAA Div. I), talks with InsideLacrosse.com (ESPN Affiliate) about the growing excitement and record number of teams that will be participating in the upcoming Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival. Sand Storm 2012, presented by Synapse Sports and Lax West, will be held Jan. 14-15 at the fabulous Empire Polo Club, nestled in the Palm Springs desert valley below the picturesque San Jacinto Mountains, and featuring 20 impeccably maintained fields. Watson talks about the Burnaby Mountain Selects as one of the well-known organizations that will be in attendance, expected to take the event to new heights in 2012:

“Word is getting around that this is a quality event. The Empire Polo Club is second to none as a venue while players and parents enjoy coming to the Palm Springs resort community,” Watson said. “In terms of overall event organization, the attention to detail is absolutely fantastic.”

Watson said registration has already surpassed last year’s inaugural number of teams and noted that such well-known organizations as Rhino Lacrosse (Ryan Powell) and All-West (Matt Ogelsby) are signed up as well as Burnaby [Mountain Selects] Lacrosse Club, one of the most respected organizations in Canada.

Burnaby Mountain will field two teams at the 5th Annual tournament. The inaugural BMS Girl's High School Elite team will compete amongst the 80-plus teams across four divisions on the girls’ side, while the Selects Boys U12 Elite team will be one of 40-plus teams in five divisions on the boys’ side.

Selects alumni Andrew Bromley (BMS '08) featured in Fall Ball Check-in on InsideLacrosse.comtop

Inside Lacrosse (ESPN Affiliate) reporter Brian Foley praises the play of Burnaby Mountain Selects 2008 grad Andrew Bromley (Surrey, BC / Earl Marriott Secondary) in his article "Fallball 2011: Providence College Friars Check-in." Bromley, a senior face-off specialist for the Friars (NCAA Div. I), helped guide Providence to an 11-10 overtime win in a recent fall scrimmage versus newly appointed NCAA Div. I program University of Michigan Wolverines. The game was played at Michigan Stadium ("The Big House") in Ann Arbor, MI.

"They [Providence College Friars - NCAA Div. I] started a new tradition by heading to Michigan this past weekend to take on the University of Michigan Wolverines. This was an excellent chance for the coaching staff to see how the team handles a road trip while getting the chance to see a football game.

The Friars ended up pulling out a 11-10 overtime victory over the first-year varsity program Michigan in overtime. The stars of the game was Jeff Weber, Adam MacBride, Robert Fleming, and Sean Wright who each picked up two goals in the exhibition victory. The most impressive thing in the game was Andrew Bromley, who dominated the faceoff X in the first half, winning the nine draws before finishing with 15 wins out of 24 attempts."

Former Selects midfielder Mike Mallory (BMS '09) selected in NLL Professional Drafttop

By William Howard, Bby Mtn Lacrosse Media Relations

Former Burnaby Mountain Selects midfielder Mike Mallory (Pitt Meadows, BC / Pitt Meadows Secondary), was the No. 21 pick in the 2011 National Lacrosse League (NLL) Entry Draft held September 21 in Toronto, Ontario. Mallory, a 2009 graduate of the Burnaby Mountain Selects program, was selected in the third round by the NLL’s Washington Stealth.

Mallory currently plays Jr. A box lacrosse for the Delta Islanders where he has been selected as a First Team All-Star in both 2011 and 2010, in addition to being named the 2010 BCJALL Rookie of the Year and 3 Star Award winner. In 43 regular season games, Mallory has tallied 78 goals and 100 assists for 178 points. He has also registered 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points in 11 play-off games with the Islanders.

The Pitt Meadows native played two seasons with Burnaby Mountain from 2006-2008, helping lead the Selects to successful tournaments in California, Florida, Maryland and Seattle, including a first place finish at the 2006 Seattle Space Needle Shootout. Burnaby Mountain Selects featured in "Canadian Influence" article in October issue of Inside Lacrosse Magazine (ESPN Affiliate)top

With more coaches flocking north to recruit, the October issue of Inside Lacrosse Magazine (ESPN Affiliate) looks at what's next for the game's hottest trend. In his column titled "Canadian Influence," IL Editor in Chief, John Jiloty discusses three main signs and contributing factors to why more and more Canadians are playing NCAA lacrosse every year:

"The first sign was the more consistent presence among the USILA All-American lists. From 2000-2004, a Canadian earned at least third-team All-American honors just four times (Gavin Prout twice, Jeff Zywicki and Brodie Merrill). Then from 2005-2011, Canadians appeared in those top three groups 19 times, including a record four in 2011 (first-teamer Kevin Crowley, second-teamers Stephen Keogh and Mark Matthews and third-teamer Jordan McBride).

Second was a Canadian diaspora among NCAA rosters. In the past, Canadians seemed to funnel into a select few schools — Delaware, Cornell, Duke, Syracuse, Albany, Denver, Ohio State, Stony Brook, Virginia, Hofstra — because of geography, coaches' connections and/or player lineage. Yet the last few years have seen every top DI coach recruiting in Canada.

Third was the 2006 establishment of the Hill Academy in Ontario. With Brodie heading up lacrosse, the Merrill family founded this school in part to help better prepare Canadian box players for NCAA field ball. EDGE in Ontario, Elev8 in Alberta and Burnaby Mountain Selects in British Columbia complement Hill as summer-time recruiting teams for Canadians — making it easier for players and coaches to connect."

The Burnaby Mountain Selects Senior (Grad 2011/2012) Elite summer touring team travelled to Baltimore, Maryland July 19-25, 2011 to compete at the nationally renowned Champ Camp (July 21-24). Teams are selected to compete at Champ Camp by invitation only with an emphasis on assembling the top high school aged club teams in North America. Burnaby Mountain is the only program to be selected from Western Canada in the tournament’s 22 year history with 2011 being the second straight year that the Selects were in attendance.

With the Burnaby Mountain Selects as the sole Canadian squad in attendance, the four-day event featured a total of 72 teams representing 22 States and the District of Columbia, competing for the coveted Champ Camp National Championship. The Senior Selects finished the four-game Pool Play Round as the second seed in Group A behind five-time defending champion and eventual 2011 runners-up, Dukes Lacrosse Club. The second-place finish advanced Burnaby Mountain to the Champ Camp Championship Tournament for the first time in program history, becoming one of only 4 teams west of the Mississippi to qualify for the Top 32 Championship Bracket.

In addition to two days of competition, the Selects also took time to tour Loyola University Maryland (NCAA Div. I), where they were given a tour of the new Ridley Athletic Complex by the Greyhound coaching staff. They also caught an afternoon Major League Baseball game at the historic Baltimore Field at Camden Yards and spent a day in New York, touring Manhattan and visiting Big Apple landmarks: Battery Park, Ground Zero, Macy’s, Trump Tower, Times Square and Rockefeller Plaza where they went on a behind-the-scenes tour of NBC Studios at “30 Rock” visiting the sets of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Football Night in America and Saturday Night Live.

Competing in a round robin, recruitment showcase against top club teams from New York and one team from Ohio, the Junior Selects posted a record of 1 win, 4 losses and a tie, while displaying their talents to more than 60 college coaches in attendance from many of the NCAA’s top college lacrosse programs. Recruiters in attendance included coaches from the host Syracuse University, back-to-back NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse national champions in 2008 and 2009, as well 2011 NCAA Div. II runners-up Mercyhurst, and NJCAA National Champion Onondaga Community College who won their third straight Junior College National Championship in 2011 and fifth title in six years.

Selects Junior Elite team featured in Day 2 Recap of Syracuse Summer Shootout on InsideLacrosse.comtop

Inside Lacrosse featured the Burnaby Mountain Selects Junior Elite team in their Day 2 Recap of the Syracuse Summer Shootout, held July 8-9 at Syracuse University. IL Reporter Casey Vock also discussed BMS opponents Cincinnati Elite 2012-2013 (OH), Albany Power Rising Juniors (NY), Binghamton Saluki (NY), CNY Roadhawks 2013 (NY) and Blaze Rising Juniors (NY) in other action from Day 2.

Day 2 of the Syracuse Shootout I was hot and bright – a fantastic day for so many teams to show their stuff in front of recruiters from far and wide. Over the first two days of the event, the Shootout I (which features travel and elite teams) brought 40 teams to the south campus area of Syracuse University, where the Hookway Practice Fields became a lacrosse extravaganza that lasted throughout the weekend. Teams traveled from as far away as Chicago, Cincinnati, Missouri, and Burnaby, British Columbia. Recruiters from Syracuse, Cornell, Albany, Cortland, Nazareth, Clarkson, Mercyhurst, and Le Moyne were on hand for the day’s action. There were coaches from colleges in North Carolina (Guilford) and Washington, DC (Catholic), and dozens more throughout the weekend. The event has become a place where recruiters are very likely to find gems with so many high school-aged players in one place.

The majority of Burnaby’s players had great stick work, and you can see how that skill set allows even smallest players to be dangerous around the cage, including little Kyran Clarke (2013), who is no more than 5-7 and was taking a beating, but getting right back up. One player really making things happen on offense for the BC crew in this contest was face-off middie Ryan Sarazin (2013), who was tough to beat on the draw. He drove down the right alley and scored on an overhand shot, and later created transition, feeding inside to Clarke, who caught, turned and cranked a shot from 10 yards out. Burnaby defender Quinton Pavan made some nice plays on groundballs, winning races to the ball and also spinning through and around a bunch of checks heading up field.

J.P. Donville: Canadians in the NCAA 2011 – Final Editiontop

J.P. (Jason) Donville is an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse.

The 2011 NCAA lacrosse season is now well behind us. About a month ago, Virginia, Mercyhurst and Salisbury were crowned National Champions in men’s collegiate lacrosse while Northwestern, Adelphi, and Gettysburg won their respective National Championships in women’s collegiate lacrosse. From a Canadian perspective, it was another terrific year for our student-athletes in a season that saw a record number of lacrosse players playing south of the border. Here’s the final recap on the year that was from a statistical perspective.

A quick look at the numbers

Based on data derived from NCAA team websites, there were 251 Canadian men and 36 Canadian women playing in the NCAA in 2011. In men’s lacrosse, 119 played in Division I, 73 in Division II, and 58 in Division III. In women’s lacrosse, the numbers are much smaller with 16 playing in Division I, 10 in Division II and 10 in Division III. In terms of provincial representation, Ontario continues to develop more than 60% of the Canadians playing in the NCAA, followed by British Columbia with 21%, Alberta at 13% and Saskatchewan at 2%. Eight different provinces had at least one student-athlete playing NCAA lacrosse in 2011.

J.P. Donville: Canadians in the NCAA 2011 – Playoff Editiontop

J.P. (Jason) Donville is an award-winning financial analyst who has extensively researched and blogged about Canadian lacrosse.

Over the course of the next twenty days the NCAA lacrosse community will come together to crown Women’s and Men’s National Champions in three divisions. As the popular NCAA TV commercial poignantly states, more than 99% of the student athletes who compete in this test of athletic skill and endurance will turn pro in something other than the sport that they play. Most will go on to live fairly ordinary but important lives as school teachers, nurses, lab technicians and sales managers. However, for the next twenty days, they are the stars and this is their show. This is the NCAA Lacrosse Championships.

With this year’s tournament selections (released Sunday night) there appears to be relatively little controversy as to which teams got in and which did not. In Division I it would have been nice to see Colgate get in on the Men’s side and Ohio State on the Women’s side given the terrific seasons that both teams just completed. Similarly, Le Moyne in Division II must be really disappointed at being left out although their exclusion says more about the small number of teams (4) in the Division II Championship than any major flaw in the selection process. From a Canadian perspective we got most of our wish list with the possible exception of Stony Brook in Division I which lost its chance to win its way into the NCAA tournament with a tough loss to this year’s Cinderella team Hartford. Overall, the selection committee appears to have done a great job of making sure the best teams got in.

This week’s edition of “Canadians in the NCAA” will follow a slightly different format than prior weeks as I will provide a brief description of key games involving “high impact” Canadians in the upcoming NCAA Championships.
