Maple Leaf Awards: 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | 2007 | 2006
The Simon Fraser University (SFU) men's lacrosse program in partnership with Burnaby Mountain Selects Lacrosse, will be hosting the 6th Annual Maple Leaf Awards Dinner in January 2012.
Each year, the Maple Leaf Awards celebrate Canada’s national sport by supporting youth and collegiate field lacrosse in British Columbia (BC). The first event of its kind in Canada, the awards dinner and silent auction ushers in the collegiate season by recognizing SFU graduating seniors, introducing the incoming freshman class, and celebrating SFU lacrosse team award winners, PNCLL All-Conference and MCLA All-American league honors recipients. The Maple Leaf Awards also acknowledge the Scholar Athletes and individual player awards for the summer and fall rosters of the Burnaby Mountain Selects Elite Touring Teams.
Proceeds raised from the event benefit the SFU Lacrosse Endowment Fund and youth and collegiate field lacrosse in BC.

Master of Ceremonies: Scott Rintoul
What's more surprising? A sportscaster with a B.Sc. in Biochemistry or a university football team starting a 5'7" wide receiver?
A graduate of Kamloops Senior Secondary, Scott Rintoul attended UBC where he walked on to the varsity football team. Four years in the lab earned him a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry; four years on the gridiron earned him a spot in BCIT's Broadcast Journalism program. Internships with local radio and TV stations led to a part-time job at Sports Page, which Scott parlayed into on-air opportunities on both BCTV and Sports Page. Soon after, Sportsnet came calling and Scott began reporting for a national network. His 2 1/2 years at Sportsnet were highlighted by a pair of Super Bowls and Grey Cups, working the Stanley Cup Final in Calgary and numerous live events from basketball to lacrosse to rugby.
Scott currently co-hosts the morning show on Vancouver's all-sports station, the TEAM 1040 with former NHL All-Star Ray Ferraro. A fixture on the Vancouver sports scene, Scott has also worked as a columnist for the Metro-Vancouver newspaper, an In-Game Host for the Vancouver Canucks (NHL) and is the Sideline Reporter for the Team 1040's game coverage of BC Lions Football (CFL).
In addition to his broadcasting career, Scott was an Assistant Coach with SFU's varsity football team in 2009 before returning to his alma mater UBC for the 2010 season where he is the Thunderbirds' Wide Receivers Coach. Scott and his wife Fiona are also the franchise owners of Flip Flop Shops in Kitsilano, the authentic retailer of the hottest brands and latest styles of flip flops and sandals www.flipflopshops.com.
Always popular, Scott returns for his fourth stint as the Master Ceremonies at the annual Maple Leaf Awards in 2011 after having previously hosted the event in 2006, 2007 and 2009
Keynote Guest: Max Ritz
Growing up in Wayne, Pennsylvania and having a standout lacrosse career at the University of Maryland, Max Ritz has gone from the East Coast hotbed of lacrosse to helping to revolutionize the sport and playing a major role in pioneering it's growth on the West Coast.
An All-ACC Attackman at Maryland, Ritz was a two-time NCAA Division I Pre-Season All-American and named to the Tewaaraton Trophy watch list, an award given to the most outstanding college lacrosse player. He received the Larry Levitt Memorial Award as the team’s best freshmen in 2005 and helped lead the Terps to four consecutive NCAA Division I National Championship Tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals in 2008 and back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2005 and 2006. Ritz finished his career at Maryland in the Terps' Top 5 for points over the past decade registering 111 points on 66 goals and 45 assists. Ritz also served as a team captain and was a three-time Honor Roll recipient.
Following a successful college career, Ritz was drafted professionally by the Denver Outlaws before being traded to the soon to be defunct San Francisco Dragons (MLL), who would fold later that year. Rather than explore other options in the MLL, Ritz decided to move out to Los Angeles anyways where he has since helped turn the sport on its' head and taken lacrosse to a whole new level.
In 2009, Ritz joined Adrenaline Lacrosse ("The Adrenaline Movement") signing on as the company's Director of Sales. Founded in 2005 by fellow Maryland lacrosse star Scott Hochstadt (Maryland '99), Adrenaline has become the premier apparel line in lacrosse and has cemented their place along with Hochstadt's Starz Lacrosse banner as the largest club lacrosse organization in the United States, backing camps and youth leagues to major recruiting tournaments and showcases.
Adding to an already impressive resume, Max Ritz partnered with Hochstadt and fellow East Coast lacrosse transplants, brother Xander Ritz (Maryland '06), Kyle Harrison (Johns Hopkins '05) and Scott's brother Craig Hochstadt (Maryland '02) to launch the LXM Pro Tour in 2009. Designed to introduce lacrosse to mainstream audiences, the LXM Pro Tour combines world-class professional lacrosse games with live concert performances. With Ritz as both a partner and player on the tour, LXM has pulled off four events to date (Orange County, CA; Austin, TX; Philadelphia, PA and Palm Coast, FL) attracting a total attendance of over 20,000 fans.
Well known today as part of the most innovative wave to hit the sport of lacrosse, Max Ritz continued to make a splash in the world of pop culture in the spring of 2010 when he appeared alongside business partner Scott Hochstadt in several season 6 episodes of the hit TV show “The Hills” on MTV. Ritz continued to make headlines this past December when he was named as an honoree by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in their 30th Anniversary “30 Under 30” Awards.

Master of Ceremonies: Steve Darling
Steve Darling was born in North York, Ontario but soon moved to North Delta, B.C. For high school he attended Seaquam Secondary School, where he longed for a radio career. His first job was with CKWX where he produced the Vancouver Canadians baseball broadcasts. He was spotted by Province columnist Tony Gallagher who brought him on-board for his talk show. Soon it was Steve behind the microphone. His first stop was with CKEG Nanaimo. Later, he returned to the Lower Mainland as co-host with David Pratt on the Sports Machine Talk show, then moved on to become "Steve the Stunt Guy" at JR Country. From there, his full-circle move brought him back to CKWX Sports. When Steve's not covering golf, baseball and hockey, he's playing them recreationally. Aside from that, he's a movie buff who puts "It's a Wonderful Life" at the top of his list of favorites. Steve now co-anchors the Global BC morning news on Global TV.
Keynote Guest: Brian Price
Born in Belleville, Ontario, Brian was diagnosed at age seven with cancer, Leukemia ALL, and was given a new outlook on life at a very young age. It took five years to beat cancer, but the chemotherapy and other drugs that he took left his thyroid only half functioning during a critical growth period and he did not reach his full growth potential. Standing at a mere 5'4” tall and 120lbs, it ironically left him the perfect size to be a coxswain on a rowing team. Although the battle to beat cancer was extremely difficult, it allowed him to become one of the best coxswains in the world and Brian is adamant that “Without having had cancer I would never have become a 3-time World Champion and Olympic Champion”.
During his international career, Brian has been crowned a World Champion three times in the Men’s Eight (2002, 2003 and 2007). He has also competed in the Men’s Coxed Pair at the World Championships three times where he won a bronze medal each time (2003, 2006 and 2007). Brian has been part of crews which have won seven medals in World Cup rowing events, including five gold, one silver and one bronze, along with three Grand Challenge Cup trophies at the prestigious Royal Henley Regatta in England (2002, 2003 and 2007).
Without question, the ultimate achievement of his 10-year career on the National Rowing Team was crossing the finish line to win the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics—a victory that completed a long line of comebacks for Brian.
A current resident of Victoria, BC, Brian has taken some time away from the National Rowing Team to pursue his motivational speaking career and spend time with his growing family. Brian currently resides in Victoria, BC with his wife Robbi, 2.5yr old daughter Brianna and newborn baby daughter Peyton (one week old).

Keynote Guest: Jeff Gombar
As a top-rated goalie, Jeff Gombar received a field lacrosse scholarship to NCAA Division 3 Whittier College in Los Angeles, California where he played for four years (from 1985-1989). Originally from the Lower Mainland, Jeff headed south of the border and immediately contributed to Whittier’s success. During his time there, Jeff helped the Poets capture 3 Western Collegiate Lacrosse League (WCLL) championships and held the Whittier record for highest save average - a record which stood until 1995. In his senior year, Jeff was named the WCLL conference all-star goalie, and was also named as an alternate in the 1989 NCAA Division 1 Nort /South all-star game in Baltimore. In 1998, Jeff was a first round WLA draft pick to Coquitlam before signing with North Shore and the Okanagan Thunder, and in 1990 Jeff played for the Baltimore Thunder of the MILL (competing in the world championship game against Detroit). Jeff was also a member of Team Canada Men’s Field Lacrosse Team where he back-stopped his country at three straight world championships; winning a bronze and 2 silvers respectively.
Jeff’s coaching resume is just as impressive, having coached at Chapman College in California for two years (1994-1996) before becoming the second head coach in SFU Lacrosse history in 1997. During his three seasons at SFU, Jeff compiled a 35-1 conference record, brought home three PNCLL conference championships, and led the team to its best finishes to date: 5th in the nation in 1997, 3rd in 1998, and 2nd in 1999. Jeff would resign as head coach following the 1999 season, but has now re-established his SFU roots as head goaltending coach for the 2007 season. As impressive a lacrosse career as this may seem, Jeff’s most celebrated accomplishment came this past summer when he helped coach team Canada to its first world lacrosse title in 28 years, defeating the US 15-10 on home soil at the world championships in London, Ontario.
In his keynote address, Jeff will reflect upon his career as a player, his experience as a coach and coming to within 15 minutes of becoming the first Canadian university to win a US lacrosse championship, and finally, what it felt like to end the drought and finish on top of the world.
