About the SATtop
The SAT Reasoning Test (formerly the Scholastic Aptitude Test and Scholastic Assessment Test) is a nationally administered, standardized test to help post-secondary institutions evaluate candidates for college admissions in the United States. The test is intended to assess a student's readiness for college by testing their critical thinking skills, as well as their ability to analyze and solve problems. The current SAT Reasoning Test takes three hours and forty-five minutes and combines test results from three 800-point sections (math, critical reading and writing) for a possible score ranging from 600-2400.
What is the SAT?top
The SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes long. It is composed of 10 timed parts that make up the three 800-point sections of math, critical reading and writing:
One 25-minute essay-writing section
Five 25-minute multiple-choice sections
- two mathematical reasoning
- two critical reading
- one writing skills
Two 20-minute multiple-choice sections
- one mathematical reasoning
- one critical reading
One 10-minute multiple-choice writing skills section
One 25-minute multiple-choice experimental section (not graded)
These 10 sections, along with two 10-minute breaks, compose the whole of the SAT.
The SAT doesn’t test logic or abstract reasoning. It tests the skills you’re learning in school: reading, writing and math. Your knowledge and skills in these subjects are important for success in college and throughout your life.
- The critical reading section includes reading passages and sentence completions.
- The writing section includes a short essay and multiple-choice questions on identifying errors and improving grammar and usage.
- The mathematics section includes questions on arithmetic operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability.
Writing the Testtop
The SAT is typically taken by high school sophomores (grade 10), juniors (grade 11) and seniors (grade 12) and is offered seven times a year; in October, November, December, January, *March (or April, alternating), May, and June, at numerous locations throughout each Canadian Province and US State.
*Note, the first spring test date (March or April) is only available in the United States; however Canadians can still register for the spring test date if they take the test in the US.
There is no limit to how many times a student can write the SAT test so students may register and write the SAT test as many times as they like, with only their highest score counted towards college admission. Generally, students in the US will write the SAT test in the spring of their Junior year so that they have the option of writing the test again in the fall of their senior year if they feel that it is necessary to try and improve their score.
It is important to note that the timelines for student-athletes are becoming increasingly earlier in the competitive landscape of college recruitment. For student-athletes, we recommend taking the SAT test in the fall of your Junior year or even as early as the spring of your sophomore year. This will allow student-athletes the opportunity to be proactive in reaching out to college coaches and the prospective universities of their choice, while maximizing their potential for academic scholarships and entrance awards. If a student writes the SAT test early for the first time, this will also provide them with a greater window to potentially re-write the test, without jeopardizing being able to meet any early admission deadlines.
The SAT tests grade 6 to 10 knowledge. Depending on curriculum, there will be some grade 11 questions too, though not many. There are no Grade 12 questions on these exams.
