Hariri Building at Georgetown University's (NCAA Div. I) McDonough School of Business, during one of the Selects recent trips to Washington, DC.

In January 2011, Burnaby Mountain Lacrosse announced the addition of Selects University to our all-star lineup of highly acclaimed programs.

Selects University is a comprehensive teaching program designed to further enhance our goal of best preparing young student-athletes for the collegiate level, while opening-up as many doors as possible for their future. The main focus of Selects University will be on college admissions preparation by offering courses designed to help students excel at writing the SAT Reasoning Test.

Right Side Bar:

About the SATtop

The SAT Reasoning Test (formerly the Scholastic Aptitude Test and Scholastic Assessment Test) is a nationally administered, standardized test to help post-secondary institutions evaluate candidates for college admissions in the United States. The test is intended to assess a student's readiness for college by testing their critical thinking skills, as well as their ability to analyze and solve problems. The current SAT Reasoning Test takes three hours and forty-five minutes and combines test results from three 800-point sections (math, critical reading and writing) for a possible score ranging from 600-2400.

What is the SAT?top

The SAT is 3 hours and 45 minutes long. It is composed of 10 timed parts that make up the three 800-point sections of math, critical reading and writing:

One 25-minute essay-writing section

Five 25-minute multiple-choice sections

Two 20-minute multiple-choice sections

One 10-minute multiple-choice writing skills section

One 25-minute multiple-choice experimental section (not graded)

These 10 sections, along with two 10-minute breaks, compose the whole of the SAT.

The SAT doesn’t test logic or abstract reasoning. It tests the skills you’re learning in school: reading, writing and math. Your knowledge and skills in these subjects are important for success in college and throughout your life.

Writing the Testtop

The SAT is typically taken by high school sophomores (grade 10), juniors (grade 11) and seniors (grade 12) and is offered seven times a year; in October, November, December, January, *March (or April, alternating), May, and June, at numerous locations throughout each Canadian Province and US State.

*Note, the first spring test date (March or April) is only available in the United States; however Canadians can still register for the spring test date if they take the test in the US.

There is no limit to how many times a student can write the SAT test so students may register and write the SAT test as many times as they like, with only their highest score counted towards college admission. Generally, students in the US will write the SAT test in the spring of their Junior year so that they have the option of writing the test again in the fall of their senior year if they feel that it is necessary to try and improve their score.

It is important to note that the timelines for student-athletes are becoming increasingly earlier in the competitive landscape of college recruitment. For student-athletes, we recommend taking the SAT test in the fall of your Junior year or even as early as the spring of your sophomore year. This will allow student-athletes the opportunity to be proactive in reaching out to college coaches and the prospective universities of their choice, while maximizing their potential for academic scholarships and entrance awards. If a student writes the SAT test early for the first time, this will also provide them with a greater window to potentially re-write the test, without jeopardizing being able to meet any early admission deadlines.

The SAT tests grade 6 to 10 knowledge. Depending on curriculum, there will be some grade 11 questions too, though not many. There are no Grade 12 questions on these exams.

Brian Lim, BSctop

Since 2001, Brian Lim has been helping his students reach their educational goals. He has tutored individual students, instructed classes and developed curriculums for various academies and educational institutions.

In secondary school, Brian received a perfect 4.0 GPA while attending Sir Winston Churchill’s International Baccalaureate program. He received numerous high school scholarships and an unconditional scholarship (USP) to the University of British Columbia as well as a top fifth percentile score on the SAT. At UBC, Brian received a degree in Microbiology and established a thriving business tutoring secondary students which he maintains today.

In 2003, Brian diversified his educational portfolio when he began teaching group classes at a large ESL school. He quickly moved up in seniority to teach lectures on a variety of different ESL subjects including grammar, writing, International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and Language Proficiency Index (LPI). After three years in the industry, he developed a successful business as a consultant for other schools, creating several successful programs. Most recently in 2010, he was a head curriculum developer for a technical college established in Jazan, Saudi Arabia.

Nathan Hoskins, MSc, BSctop

For more than 10 years Nathan has worked as an academic advisor and tutor for international students as well as BC high school and university students. He has assisted students applying for admission at several Canadian universities as well as American colleges, including law schools and medical schools.

Prior to co-developing the curriculum for the Selects SAT Prep program, Nathan completed a Master of Science degree in Developmental Biology from Boise State University in 2009. While at Boise State, he was a teaching assistant, lab instructor, and lecturer in general biology, developmental biology, and biomaterials engineering. In addition to his studies and work as a teacher, Nathan was also an Assistant Coach for the Broncos men’s lacrosse team.

Prior to his time at Boise State University, Nathan attended Simon Fraser University where he was an Academic All-American in lacrosse and majored in Cell and Molecular Biology with a minor in Criminology and a Certificate in Liberal Arts.

He has written both the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (now the SAT Reasoning Test), scoring in the high 90th percentiles in both mathematics and writing/reading components.
